What is it?
The Business Safety Education Program is one of twelve initiatives identified within the recently announced Downtown Clean and Safe Strategy (DCSS). The initiative will attempt to address a gap that was identified by the business community in regards to very little information or education occurring that may assist businesses, non-profits, and residents) in terms of what to do in certain “safety” and “security” related circumstances.
The program is being developed and funded by the Downtown Lethbridge Business Revitalization Zone, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Lethbridge Police Service, and City of Lethbridge.
The program is in the initial stages of development with full roll-out being anticipated for May 2019.
The program will include an education resource that will be publically available in print and digital form as well as monthly seminars with the business and non-profit community. Each seminar will highlight a key aspect of the program and provide opportunity for roundtable discussions on issues being faced.
What is the Downtown Clean and Safe Strategy?
In order to effectively revitalize downtown we need to create a positive, unforgettable downtown experience. To achieve this the most fundamental issue we need to address is the real and/or perceived notion that Downtown is messy, dirty, and feels unsafe.
Recent changes in perception on cleanliness and safety have impacted the vibrancy of downtown with lower attendance at festivals and events, business revenues dropping, residential and commercial vacancy, new developments being put on hold, etc.
The Downtown Clean and Safe Strategy (DCSS) is city-led strategy that has been developed in collaboration with various stakeholders to highlight, coordinate, and implement all the initiatives, programs, and tasks the City is doing in respect to addressing the negative perceptions on cleanliness and safety in the Downtown (and adjacent areas).
